Realize domestic violence can happen to anyone at anytime. Educate yourself by speaking with local domestic violence program advocates about how to ask the right questions. Strive to report only facts; not opinions or reactions from family, friends or neighbors. Pay attention to language; domestic violence is a crime, not a “lover’s quarrel” or “family tiff.” Offer information that does not compromise the safety and confidentiality of the victim and/or victim’s family. Negate myths by speaking with survivors and informing the public of the reasons for staying and the dangers in leaving abusive partners. Serve as a tool to educating the general public through responsible reporting. Expose domestic violence as an issue that deserves everyone’s attention.
