University of Michigan Police Department's Silent Witness

TAMARA WILLIAMS
AGE 20
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

Tamara Williams was a LSA senior studying psychology at the University of Michigan. She lived on campus with her two-year-old daughter, Kiera, in Northwood Family Housing and had hopes of becoming a social worker.

On September 23, 1997, Tamara was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, Kevin Nelson. Two years earlier, Nelson had been sentenced to 18 months probation for domestic assault against Tamara. When police arrived, Nelson was shot and both he and Tamara died at the hospital that night.

After her death, Tamara was posthumously awarded her degree in psychology and her death sparked a renewed effort with in the University of Michigan community to educate about domestic violence and resources for survivors.

The Silent Witness is on display in the police station lobby for the entire month of October. It will also be on display at the annual 5k event, Purple Run Ann Arbor.
