Domestic Violence Awareness Talk

This event will highlight 30 years of domestic violence research findings, summarized and facilitated by Dr. Maria A. Turkson, a psychologist and professor at Penn State Harrisburg who teaches a variety of psychology courses at the graduate and undergraduate level and specializes in gender issues.  The public is invited to attend free of charge! Attendees are asked to wear something purple to show support for domestic violence awareness and the unity that is necessary to make social change.  No one will be turned away for not wearing purple (no barriers), but we ask that attendees try to include something purple in their attire, such as a purple scarf, hat, shirt, etc., to show support. Purple ribbons will be given out to all attendees. The event will include activities and short video clips centered around raising awareness.

The talk will be from 11:30am-12:45pm.  By raising awareness on campus about the issues impacting women, Dr. Turkson is the 2018 recipient of the Kathryn Townes Women’s Award from Penn State Harrisburg.  Dr. Turkson also regularly presents on domestic violence, such as her upcoming symposium for the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and teaches courses in gender psychology and domestic violence. In the Washington, DC area where she held a private practice, Dr. Turkson gained valuable expertise at a Women’s Center where she regularly assisted women and their families negotiate the difficulties they may face as a result of gender socialization and victimization, including domestic violence.

The event is held in C-213, Olmsted (Auditorum), Penn State Harrisburg, 777 W Middletown Pike, Middletown, PA. Attendees may park in areas designated for visitors. For inquiries, please contact Dr. Turkson by email: mat17@psu.edu.
