“Walk a Mile In Their Shoes” 5K/1 Mile Combats Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse

Only 5% of domestic violence instances or encounters are reported. Alma G. Davis knew there had to be a better way to reach out to those affected. As a survivor of domestic abuse herself, Davis started a foundation to educate communities and advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. The Alma G. Davis Foundation is hosting its 5th Annual “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” – a 5K Run/1 Mile Walk – on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8am.

A unique characteristic of this event is that those choosing to walk the mile have an option to be paired with a survivor who will share her/his personal story. The run/walk begins at Park Tavern (500 10th St. NE) in Piedmont Park and continues along Atlanta’s Beltline Eastside Trail. Sign up to participate or volunteer at (pre-registration is $30; on site is $40).

“The Walk A Mile In Their Shoes literally gives a voice to domestic abuse survivors,” said Davis. “The event raises money for domestic violence programs offered through the Foundation to support survivors and shelters statewide. Our goal is to bring awareness to these issues and demonstrate the effects it has on our communities.  We also want to offer encouragement, hope, and the tools necessary to rebuild the lives of those affected by domestic abuse.”

Georgia ranks 14th in for the nation for domestic violence crimes; national statistics include:

  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men (aged 18+) in the U.S. have experienced domestic violence in their lifetimes.
  • Every year an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of domestic violence.
  • Every 9 seconds a woman in the US is assaulted or beaten.
  • Domestic violence and child abuse run hand-in-hand.  Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.
  • 1.5 Million high school students, nationwide, experience dating partner violence annually.
  • Corporations and economic loss exceed $5.8 billion annually due to domestic violence – $4.1 Billion in direct medical & healthcare costs; $1.8 billion in lost productivity.

For those who cannot participate, or who’d like to raise money all month long, please donate through  Allstate Purple Purse Foundation (through or sign up as a virtual participant and walk/run where you live.  All proceeds will benefit the Alma G. Davis Foundation.
